Globalization and the new economy have subjected organizations to rapidly evolving markets and increasing competitiveness. Under these circumstances, the critical source of competitive advantage often derives not from having the most ingenious product design, the best marketing strategy, or state-of-the-art production technology, but rather from leading a company effectively. Although many organizations recognize the importance of managing their work force effectively, it is remarkable how often firms and managers fail to do so.
